San Francisco Flower & Garden Show

by Katie Taylor

The BACPS will once again have a booth at the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, delighting kids and enlightening parents about the wonders of the carnivorous plant world.

To pull off this amazing feat, we need YOUR help!

You, too, can help man the booth on any of the days below, for just a few hours or as many as you want, helping kids pot up their own baby Venus flytraps, and showing off our best bug-eating marvels. (We found that last year the Drosera capensis were more popular than the Venus flytraps so we are looking for D. capensis or other sundew donations to give away to the kids.) When your shift(s) is up, feel free to enjoy the always fantastic gardens and great food found just around the corner. Admission for booth volunteers is on us! That's right, free admission! Just one four-hour shift, and the rest of the day is yours.

The show runs from Wednesday, March 24, through Sunday, the 28th, at the San Mateo Event Center. Wednesday through Saturday, the booth hours are: 9:45 - 1:30, 1:00 - 5:00, and 4:30 - 8:00. Sunday the show closes early, so the last shift will end at 6:00 pm. Set-up and take-down will be on Tuesday and Monday. Don't feel overwhelmed: it's two people per shift, with a half hour overlap at both ends -- there will be plenty of help!

It's just that easy! Along with filling pots and brains, you would also be asked to mist some things once or twice, and guard the volunteered plants, to see that they return home safely. There will be a coloring area for the kids, and a sign-in sheet for prospective members.

We also need volunteer plants! This is your chance to show off that fantastic Nepenthes filling your bathroom window, your favorite terrarium, or that gargantuan sundew gluing up any and all who dare enter your back yard. How about a pot full of mega flytraps? Post an idea on the forum, or send me an e-mail -- all offers are welcome!

If you would like to take a shift or two, or have something to display, send me an e-mail: littlegreennut@pacbell.net.
