Giant plastic CP at CHOMP! |

Complete show information -- with links to the
show poster,
entry forms,
contest rules, etc. -- can be found on the
BACPS website at www.bacps.org/show.html.
Should I enter a plant in the show?
Yes! This is a great opportunity for you to show off a well-grown plant and
share your hobby with the many people in the Bay Area who come to the show every year.
Unlike some incredibly competitive shows, this one is just a lot of fun.
Anyone can enter a plant and anyone can win.
The success of this show is dependent on YOU bringing in plants to share and
show to the hundreds of people who will be bringing their families to see and learn
about carnivorous plants, so please, support the BACPS in this effort. And finally,
with CHOMP! barely a mile away, there are a lot of people interested in seeing more!
But I really don't like to compete!
Some people don't particularly care for the competition. We have taken care of that by
allowing people to display plants without actually entering them in the competition.
It is a great way to contribute to the BACPS efforts to educate the public without
getting involved in the fun-but-competitive side of the show. Besides, the rest of us want to see your plants.
Also, if you can't make it in time for the judging, it will still allow you to show the plants.
Is the entry process hard? Does it cost money?!
No, it can't be easier or faster, and entry is free. Some of you might be intimidated by
the whole process of entering plants in a show. However, it can't be simpler. There is no
pre-entry process. There are no fees. You will be greeted at the door by fellow club
members eager to see your plants and help you if you need it.
How easy is it? Well, here is a quick rundown of the entry process.
- Arrive between 9am and 10:20am (judging starts at 10:30).
- Fill out an entry form (you can fill this out the night before by downloading it
from here).
- Take the form and plant to the Registration table and let a runner place the plant on the proper table.
- Go for coffee.
- Enjoy the show when it opens at 12:00 and then enjoy the city until 4:00.
- Pick up your plant at 4pm.
If you don't care if your plants are judged, or just can't make it in time, please bring
the plants in before 12:00. We have to start the judging at precisely 10:30, so any plant
arriving after 10:30 can't be entered for judging, but we can still put it on display.
Do you need any other help?
Yes, we do! We need volunteers to arrive at 9:00 to help set up vendors and people
entering their plants. There is a lot to do in just a couple of hours. Please
email stephenwd@sbcglobal.net if you are planning on arriving early to help.

Bug Day at the Randall Museum in San Francisco was back on April 21, but because there was no
Spring Newsletter this year -- for the usual reason, which is
that nobody submitted anything, alas -- I'm going to use the September Bulletin to sneak in a belated
thank-you and a few pictures of the event.
Ron LaPedis and Christine Lam were great again this year and deserve our thanks. In many ways, Bug Day has been
the club's biggest outreach event lately. Probably ten times more people attend
Bug Day than attend our annual show, everybody stops by our table, and there are always
a great many squeals of, well, a sort of delight mixed with horror. Very satisfying indeed.
We managed to improve our display a bit this year.
We uprooted some Utricularia tridentata and Genlisea violacea
to show people how these plants are carnivorous, and we sliced open a Sarracenia oreophila pitcher to exhibit
the catch of the day. On the down side, we didn't have nearly enough plants to sell this time. I sold a
few seedlings of the red form of Drosera filiformis to one kid for a dollar, but he would very much have
preferred a pitcher plant, he told me.
