2007 Annual Show & Sale

by Stephen Davis

Date: September 22, 2007

Open to members and the public: 12:00 to 4:00
Location: Saint Anne's Church, near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco at 850 Judah St.
Parking: FREE and easy access parking right on the grounds! Mass transit (Muni Metro Route: N Judah) right to the door.

If you just want to display them and not compete, that's fine too. But please bring them before noon.

Also, please do not remove plants from the show area before 4:00. There is nothing more disappointing than coming late to the show and seeing a bunch of empty places on the tables.

We have decided to have our annual show and sale in San Francisco because we wanted to be closer to "CHOMP!" at the Conservatory of Flowers. This will give members the opportunity to not only see the show and sale, but also see the "CHOMP!" exhibit before or after the show. The easy parking and plenty of places to eat and other things to do will make for a great outing for the whole family, whether you are into the plants or not.

We also hope the show will draw a larger public than we have in the past. People interested in more information after going to "CHOMP!" will hopefully stop by. The number one question I have gotten when I have visited the exhibit is "Can I grow them?" Followed quickly by "How can I grow them?"

Bring Your Plants to Show!

As with every year, the success of the show is not in what the vendors bring, but what the MEMBERS bring! Not only your enthusiasm for the plants, but your ACTUAL PLANTS! Without your beautifully grown plants there is no show. Please, bring them in. They don't have to be perfect. We are always surprised that there are so few Venus flytraps, and usually only one or two Cephalotus. We need those rare plants and just some nice specimens. CHOMP! is wonderful, but we can do better! I know there are some incredible color variations that they just have not been able to get. Please bring your plants to show. The easy parking will make it easier for you to carry display plants in and carry purchases out. We expect a larger turnout from the public than ever, and we need lots of variety and nice plants.

What Can I Do to Help?

Have you noticed that there is more to the show every year beyond just plants? We have had science projects, fun facts to know, Venus flytrap feedings, images of BACPS events, and how to grow carnivorous plants. Have you thought that the show needed something more to make it that much more complete and professional? Something to teach, amaze, or just fascinate someone? Contact Stephen or Doris and tell us what your idea is, and we can tell you if we have room for it at the show.

By the way, we are expecting some great S. leucophylla and S. leucophylla hybrids. I've talked to many members, and they seem to be coming out early and strong!

OK, let's get going! Go the the website often and look for updates. We expect the poster to be up soon. Take them to your college campus and your local nursery and pet shop. We MUST get the word out!

Online Forum Help Needed

Lastly, we are putting together an online forum for BACPS members to share information and communicate. It is mostly complete, but we need someone to help clean it up, put logos in, and make sure the settings work correctly. It's a pretty-easy-to-use system, but it needs someone who can spend some time on it. Please contact Stephen Davis if you can spare the time.
