I thought that many of you would want to know that Marilee Maertz, Peter's partner at California Carnivores, is in the hospital. I remember Marilee from my very first days in CP when she gave me a portion of her very own Sarracenia "Coppertop." I could not find one anywhere, and for whatever reason felt it "had to be in my collection."
Her illness has meant that she has been sorely missed at California Carnivores and the many markets and shows she normally attends, including the San Francisco Ferry Building on Sundays.
If you would like to send a get well card, you can send it to California Carnivores. The address is on their home page, www.californiacarnivores.com.
An informal gathering to help Peter and Marilee out. Refreshments will be served by the BACPS. A great opportunity to take advantage of Peter's sale and meet and talk to other CP enthusiasts.
Peter will give a short talk and demonstration on how to propagate Nepenthes by stem cuttings and how to pollinate this genus and grow them from seed.
Program Topic: Allen Lowrie's Carnivorous Plants of Australia,
Vol. 4 and More!
Date: November 13, 12PM - 4PM
Location: UC Botanical Garden, Berkeley
Joe Mazrimas will be moderating a digital slideshow of rare and some never-before-seen Australian carnivorous plants!
Many of us have ordered seeds from Allen Lowrie, author of the Carnivorous Plants of Australia trilogy. In a letter to Joe Mazrimas that came with the seed order, Allen included a CD and an announcement. Some further details were uncovered by Christina Palmer when she called and spoke with Lowrie after the BACPS potluck. Apparently, Lowrie is planning on a four-book trilogy instead of the usual three! It sounds very exciting, and he has sent Joe many of the images in the first three books as well as the proposed fourth book, along with some research papers. The CD was a gift to Joe, as Joe helped Lowrie with collecting some scientific papers and such when Allen was visiting here many years ago and researching his first books.
Joe will be showing the pictures at the November meeting. Many are identified, but quite a few are new species nobody has seen, and a handful may not even be named yet! Now that is exciting! Since most of us have not seen Volume One or Volume Two, as these books are very nearly impossible to find and go for over $500, this is going to be a rare opportunity to see these plants. I would suspect that fewer than 50 people, if that, have ever seen some of the plants depicted in these slides.
Contest: As not all of these photos have the plants identified, Joe will be holding a contest to guess some of these plants. If you are right, you will have first pick from the raffle table!
Plants to show: In honor of this event, let's make this Australian CP Month with the BACPS! Bring in your Australian CP to show!
November is also our New Officer Election Month.
Have you wanted to get more involved? Now is your chance. Run for a position in the BACPS. We will be posting available positions in the next bulletin.
Well, I think we can safely say we had another successful Carnivorous Plant
Show!
I think everyone was very impressed with the incredible plants that were shown. We certainly have some great CP growers among our members. We will be posting pictures on the website as soon as we can, and I will try to get a photo album up like last year's ASAP. It won't have all the names at first, but it will be a start.
We had nearly 100 entries, including non-judged plants, and quite a few surprises. The "Best of Show" was a non-blooming ping! Who'd have thought! The dish of pings was incredibly well presented and meticulously well grown. The judges were in awe. All in all, 25 ribbons were awarded.
Dominic Diaz, who took the "Best of Show" 1st Place with his ping dish,
dominated the competition, while there were many other new winners and some
of the "old" growers well represented too.
The display of utrics was better than it has ever been. Utrics are underappreciated plants that, thanks to Tony, Forbes, Randall, and Dominic, are probably going to start taking a better position in people's collections.
Fantastic displays were the talk of the group. People spent quite a bit of time perusing the show plants and, frankly, often more time with the sale tables looking for plants to add to their own collections.
We had a huge effort from our major CP sellers. I want to thank Don Elkins for driving all the way up from Pismo Beach, Robert Goleman of Hortus Botanicus (www.hortusb.com) who came down from Fort Bragg, and Lois of Raccoon Ridge Nursery for making such a huge effort to be there with such incredible plants. Forbes Conrad came all the way from LA and had quite a few plants I have never seen for sale before. A round of applause for his mom for driving him all the way up. Talk about supportive.
Most of these people were up late at night and had to get up at about 3 or 4
AM to support our habit and get their plants to us. I want them to know we
do appreciate them.
Not everything went smoothly, of course, and we certainly need to do a better job of promotion next year. Please consider helping us out. We are already putting together a team for the show next year. It usually doesn't take much time, and the volunteers had a lot of fun. Without your help, we won't have a show.
The biggest problem I have had is getting the names of all the people who stood up to volunteer, especially at the last minute. A special thanks to Geoff Wong, Bill Baumgartl, and Judith Finn of the UC Botanical Garden, Berkeley, for judging. Also, Phil Faulisi took over placing the sellers and supplied much support and lifesaving ideas. Now if I could only remember his last name. Also, Steve Mazma, Don Elkins, Chris Ullsperger, John and John Pizzicara, Bill Weaver, Mike Ross, Dominic Diaz (Official Photographer), Katherine Henwood, Joe Mazrimas, Larry Logoteta, Bob Sippel, and many more whose names I didn't get or have forgotten. In particular, there were several people helping with the placement of the show plants and plant record-keeping who were selfless and critical to the success of the show and whose names I didn't get. If you helped, please email me, as I do want to thank everyone.
The seeds from Allen Lowrie of Australia came in. We sold a large percentage of the seeds the club bought for its members and had all the seeds picked up that were ordered. I want to thank Ted Berry and Joe Mazrimas for their hard work. You have no idea how much effort it takes to place an order with Lowrie, and to do it with over $700 worth of seeds to so many people is a herculean task. It is my hope that over the coming years we will really start to see some incredible plants coming to the meetings, either for display, for trade, or for sale.
We may place another order before November, but we will probably wait until the November meeting to place the next big order. Start saving your money!

The BACPS Bulletin serves as a monthly forum for members to make CP-related announcements: events, want ads, items for sale, information sought, growing tips, etc. Submissions must be received by Tony Gridley (tgridley@comcast.net) by the 23rd of the month prior to publication.
