BACPS Potluck

Stephen Davis will be a hosting a potluck open house for BACPS members on Sunday August 1, 2004, from 12 to 4pm. It will be held at Stephen's home in south San Jose.

"I've heard a few people mention that they would like to see a more social event for the BACPS, as well as something that is in the South Bay," said Stephen Davis, president of the BACPS. "Since our normal summer meeting is being held in September, I thought it would be a good time to try something new in the long break between meetings this year."

Members are asked to bring drinks and a food item. If you want to bring plants to trade or sell, that would be OK as well. There will be limited space, so call if you have a lot of plants to be sure he can accommodate you.

RSVP is requested, but not required. We'd like to get an idea of how many people might be attending. Email your RSVP to Stephen at stephenwd@sbcglobal.net.

See Stephen's bog garden at www.carnivorousplants.homestead.com to get an idea of what you will be seeing.

Directions and his address are at carnivorousplants.homestead.com/address.html.

Lowrie Carnivorous Plants Catalogue Order Update

by Stephen Davis

BACPS members ordered nearly $600 worth of seeds, representing almost 200 individual seed packets, from Allen Lowrie's Carnivorous Plants Catalogue. The BACPS ordered over $200 worth of seeds for sale at the next meeting for people who were not able to pick up order forms at the last meeting.

Many thanks to Ted Berry, who entered every seed order into a database and compiled the order for us. He did a fantastic job.

Lowrie's seeds are from some of the top growers and collectors all over the world, as well as his own collections. There is probably no bigger and broader source for carnivorous plant seeds. The varieties available are incredible, and we should be seeing some fantastic plants in the coming years as members sell their extras at the meetings. (HINT! HINT!)

It is normally very expensive to order from the Australian-based Lowrie. Shipping, processing, certificates, and other fees are around $30 per order, so the typical grower can't afford to buy a handful of seeds. The BACPS will be covering this cost for the members.

We will have the catalog available again at the next meeting, and we will take orders for delivery at the Fall meeting.

If Allen Lowrie sounds familiar to you, it is because he is the author of the trilogy Carnivorous Plants of Australia. Volume I can be purchased for a mere $500 on the open market now, as it and Volume II are out of print. Volume III is going fast, so you might want to buy it now.

Dale Chihuly Installation at Atlanta Botanical Garden

by Doris Quick

The Atlanta Botanical Garden has an installation by glassblower Dale Chihuly. If you are familiar with Chihuly's work, this is one of his finest installations.

There is a large chandelier hanging in the Nepenthes area that was inspired by Nepenthes.

Other pieces in the conservatory appear to have been inspired by Sarracenia.

The Botanical Garden is exceptional at any time (great carnivore displays), but the Chihuly display, which runs through Oct 31, is a real bonus. They are staying open late on Tuesdays so visitors can appreciate the glass with lighting.

Here's the web address for the Botanical Garden:

Prices for the Chihuly event are $12.00 per person. Children under 3 free. Students $7.00 and Seniors $9.00.

Request for Newsletter Articles

We have received a lot of ideas for possible articles: what other clubs are doing, humor, member interviews or autobiographies, pests of the quarter, featured plants, beginners corner, growing techniques, terrarium corner, further information after meeting programs, field trips, and interesting vacation spots. These are all excellent ideas.

Now we need folks to write the articles.

Please send your ideas, articles, pictures, indignant letters to the editor, and any other suggestions to Tony Gridley at tgridley@comcast.net.

The BACPS Bulletin serves as a monthly forum for members to make CP-related announcements: events, want ads, items for sale, information sought, growing tips, etc. Submissions must be received by Tony Gridley (tgridley@comcast.net) by the 23rd of the month prior to publication.
