                         SUMMER PLANT SHOW
                            Phil Faulisi

We'll folks it's just about here. The summer show is set to go on
Saturday, August 23rd from 12noon to 4pm at the University of California
Botanical Garden in Berkeley. The show is open to anyone wishing to
sell or display plants. As an added incentive the regular Garden
admission fee will be waived for any participant who is bringing plants
for sale or display. We encourage all members to display as many
specimens as possible. The format for the show is as follows:

10am-12noon - Vendor registration and set up. Vendors must check in at
the registration table by the meeting hall entrance where their name
will be checked off from a master list. Anyone wishing to sell plants
must register in advance with me by emailing me your name and name of
your business if applicable, telephone number and the amount of table
space required in feet. This is necessary to assure that we have
reserved space available for your. Vendors who have not registered in
advance will have to wait until all pre-registered vendors have arrived
and setup. The space will then be granted on a first come-first served
basis but there is by no means a guarantee that there will be space
available. Please email me to reserve your space.

10:30am-12noon - Display plant registration and set up. All registrants
must fill out a plant registration form at the table outside the
display room. We will be using the back room of the meeting hall as our
space for exhibiting the cp specimens. Once plants have been registered
at the front desk (located just outside the display room, but inside
the meeting hall), volunteers will be available in the display room to
help with the placement of the plants and or direct exhibitors to where
their entry (entries) should be placed, for example where all the
Nepenthes plants are staged and where all the cp planters go.
Individuals who are not displaying plants will not be allowed to enter
the display area prior to 12noon. Registrants who are displaying plants
are to setup their displays and then immediately leave the display area
to avoid unnecessary congestion and disturbance to other participants
who are trying to setup their displays.

There will be an auction and a raffle table. Plants and other related
cp items are needed for both tables. If you have only a few plants to
sell, try the auction table or co-op with another vendor.

We are creating BACPS flyers to hand out at the front door that gives a
little background history on the society and its meetings. These can be
used throughout the year and can be given out to nurseries, garden
centers, schools, friends, etc. It is a great way to introduce the
BACPS to the general public.

We will need volunteers to help in the following areas:
Raffle ticket sales
Vendor and display plant registration
Display room organization and security (This position will help direct
people to the area where their plants should be displayed)
Refreshments: Drinks, Snacks, etc.
Clean up - should be minimal
Odds and ends as needed

The display entry categories are as follows:

1) All genera will automatically create a category: i.e. Nepenthes,
Sarracenia, Darlingtonia, Heliamphora, Cephalotus, Dionaea, Drosera,
   Utricularia/Genlisea, Pinguicula and Other CP's
The categories will not be broken down further into sub-species or
species, variants, or forms, species or specific hybrids.
2) Dish gardens, terrariums, and aquariums.
3) Cp's in art. This category can comprise of drawings, paintings,
sculptures, embroidery etc. and must have been created by the
   displayor.
4) Non-judged. This category allows judges to display plants or any
individual not vying for an award.

All plants and dish gardens/planters/ terrariums/ aquariums entries
will be judged on excellence of culture and presentation (container,
condition of top dressing/ soil) and must be groomed and free of all
dead growth, weeds and alage. Containers must be clean and free of
dirt, glue from old nursery stickers, cracks and/or breaks. If
necessary, plants should be staked or supported to present the plant to
its best ability.

The displayer for a minimum of six months must have grown all plant
entries.

The winner from each category will receive a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place
ribbon. The Best of Show winners will receive the following:
Best of Show Grand Champion
Best of Show 2nd Place
Best of Show 3rd Place

Please join us for a truly memorable even. This is an excellent
opportunity to show off your best specimens and make some great new
friends... and buy some great new plants. I hope to see you all there
proudly displaying your beautiful plants. Please feel free to email me
if you have any questions, or to reserve sales table space or in case I
have left anything out.

MINUTES FROM THE May 10, 2003 MEETING
                            Judith Finn

There were 40 people in attendance at this past meeting at the
U.C. Berkeley Botanical Garden. President Geoff Wong began the meeting
by informing people of a new policy regarding e-mail announcements.
Since we only publish a formal newsletter 4 times a year, people would
like to have additional means to inform the club members more
frequently about events, issues opportunities, etc. We did not want to
abuse e-mail access with a stream of notices so a decision was made to
have a monthly bulletin that would allow people to communicate with
their fellow CP enthusiasts. Bill Weaver re-stated that he does not
give out e-mail addresses to others, saving us from potential
advertising spam. Be sure, though, to keep Bill updated with changes in
your e-mail addresses.
It was reported that the April event at the Lindsay Museum was a
success. The Museum is located in Walnut Creek. Its main mission is as
a wildlife refuge and a educational facility with a strong emphasis on
exposing children to the wonders of nature. Joe Mazrimas and Larry
Logoteta introduced the kids to carnivorous plants. Larry had grown 150
Cape Sundews to give to the children, who were of course, delighted.
The Museum is interested in starting a collection of insectivorous
plants of their own and would like our club to participate next year in
their annual event.
On May 18th, the Randall Museum in San Francisco had their annual
Bug Days event. Mike Woodring generously donated several flats of Venus
Fly Traps and Sarracenia plants for demonstrations and sales. I brought
examples of the various genera and species from the UCBG to exhibit. It
was very much a family event with the children between the ages of 2-8
years of age. They were delighted in feeding the flytraps with sow
bugs. It was a lot of fun and helped out the Museum. This is also an
event for you to put on your calendar for next year. It would be great
to have more participants from our group next year.

Christopher Tuberville again offered to sell, at cost, to members, the
out - of - print book by Barry Juniper. Your once - in - a - lifetime
opportunity to have a $3,000 book for $37.56. Please contact him if you
are interested in purchasing a copy of this book.

Phil Faulisi discussed the BACPS Carnivorous Plant Show that will be
held in the Conference Center at U.C. Berkeley Botanical Garden on
Saturday, August 23rd, from 12noon to 4pm. He would like this show to be
a great success and encourage everyone to groom your plants and bring
them in for display. There will be separate categories for
professionals and amateurs. We would love to have as much diversity as
possible and have as many people as possible to participate.

Peter D'Amato announced that his newly located Sebastopol Nursery would
be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. His partner, Marilee Maertz is now
selling carnivores on Sundays from 9:00am-2:00pm, at the newly
refurbished Ferry Building Farmer's Market in San Francisco.

Our speaker for the meeting was Greg Lum who, as many of you know, is
our newsletter editor and vice-president. He spoke only about his
international travels and his experience of bringing carnivorous plants
back into the US. He also distributed informational handouts and
referred people to the USDA website if they had any questions. Greg
also setup a display of colorful pictures and handouts from the last
ICPS Conference in Japan last year.

Auction Plants:
Members brought in Nepenthes lowii, N. maxima, N. burbidgeae, N. maxima
x N. albomarginata, N. khasiana, N. mirabilis variety "winged", N.
veitchii (dried) pitches, Cephalous follicularis variety 'Hummer's'
Giant', Pinguicula laueana and Drosera capensis.
Display Plants:
Mike Woodring brought in the following plants for display: Utricularia
and Drosera specimens, Dionaea muscipula variety 'Shark's Teeth',
Pinguicula agnata, Pinguicula x weser and Pinguicula filifolia.
Larry Logoteta brought in a very red form of Sarracenia flava which
grows 2-3 feet tall.
Phil Falisi offered a beautifully colored red Sarracenia flava x
Sarracenia leucophylla. Stephen Davis brought in a Drosera capensis x
D. aliciae, D. aliciae, D. tokaiensis, D. nitidula sp. omissa hybrid
and D. peltata.
Katherine Henwood brought in a lovely Sarracenia variety 'Mardi Gras'
and Drosera peltata, D. nitidula and D. prolifera. Two Sarracenia
crosses from seed started in 2001, S. flava variety 'Red Tube' x S.
leucophylla. She grows her Sarracenia plants outdoors and her Drosera
plants inside.
Greg Lum brought in a beautiful container of Pinguicula agnata and a
Pinguicula x wesser grown under lights on his desk.
James Lautner offered different varieties of Sarraceina and Dionaea and
Drosera binata specimens.
Much thanks to all who brought their plants in for the display and
for the auction as well. We always appreciate seeing the plants and
learning your growing techniques. It is helpful for people just
getting started out to get valuable information from long-time growers.
