====================================================================== BAY AREA CARNIVOROUS PLANT SOCIETY BULLETIN JUNE 2003 ====================================================================== NEW MONTHLY FORUM FOR BACPS ANNOUNCEMENTS Geoff Wong The BACPS e-mail policy has been to limit e-mail messages to newsletters, plus a few announcements about club business that cannot wait for the next newsletter. Many people gave us their e-mail address with the understanding that they would not be deluged with e-mail messages. Recently we have received more and more requests for e-mail distributions. In order to accommodate the increased interest, we will be trying out a monthly mailing where members can post CP-related announcements. This publication will allow us to disseminate information more frequently than the quarterly newsletter without overwhelming members' e-mail mailboxes. The BACPS BULLETIN will be published on the first day of each month. Items must be received by Bill Weaver by the 20th of the month prior to publication. Articles should be in written in plain text (only regular characters, spaces, and carriage returns) and be in ready-to-publish form. We look forward to trying out this new forum. Please contact me if you have any comments. In particular, I would like to know if anyone is having problems with the text width. I tried to set up this document so that the margins would be normal looking (i.e. not cut off short) by everyone's e-mail program, but there does not seem to be a universally acceptable solution. Geoff =========================================== SUMMER BACPS MEETING: AUGUST 23, 2003 Phil Faulisi Don't forget to prime your best specimens for the show. All systems are go and the award ribbons are already being designed. If you have any questions about entering plants please email me. A full set of rules and guidelines will be published in the August newsletter, but remember that you must have grown the display specimen for a minimum of six months if you are entering for an award. Judges, who are ineligible for awards, and members who wish not to have their plant judged can display their plants in a non-judged category. Don't forget to bring lots of plants for sales, auction or raffle. This is going to be the best show ever! Phil Faulisi =========================================== VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PLANT SHOW PUBLICITY Larry Logoteta To all BACPS members, I would like some volunteers who are interested in contacting their local newspapers with information concerning our upcoming BACPS Plant Show on August 23, 2003. We have people who are going to contact their newspapers in the Contra Costa, East Bay, and Stockton areas. I need volunteers for other areas. If you can help, I can be reached at (removed). Thanks, Larry Note: Larry volunteered at the last BACPS meeting to serve as the new Publicity Manager. In this role he will coordinate activities to disseminate information related to BACPS events. Thanks, Larry. -Geoff Wong =========================================== STRYBING ARBORETUM SUMMER GARDENING FAIR Geoff Wong We received an invitation from Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco to participate in their Summer Gardening Fair. If anyone is interested in organizing a table, please contact me and I will forward you the information and name of the person to contact. They must hear from us by Wednesday, July 16 to reserve a spot. Here are excerpts from their letter. "Strybing Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is hosting its 4th Annual Summer Gardening Fair on Saturday, August 2, 2003, 9am-2pm. The idea behind this event is to bring together as many of the local plant clubs and horticultural organizations as possible at one place at one time. It provides a real service for the public and is a great outreach and sales opportunity for your club or organization. As this event grows it has the potential to become a very important event for the gardening and horticultural community. We hope your organization will join us for this fun event." "Each group is invited to set up a display table of plants and other materials to be manned during the course of the event by its knowledgeable members. Bring brochures and other information to share with visitors." "Among the groups that participated last year were: African Violet Society, Begonia Society, San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners, SF Succulent & Cactus Society, Strybing Nursery, SF Flower & Garden Show, and SF Rose Society. Altogether, we had about 30 groups participate. The groups filled up the entire Entry Garden area of the Arboretum and spilled out onto the Main Lawn." =========================================== VISIT TO SAN FRANCISCO Glenn Petersen My wife and I will be visiting the Bay Area the week of June 16th for a wedding and I am wondering if there are any CP related things I should see when in the area. I am planning on visiting California Carnivores but I'm wondering if there are any collections, natural habitats, etc. that might be worth a visit. I am currently planning my trip. Thanks for your time. Glenn Petersen =========================================== JUNIPER BOOK Christopher Turbeville One of the best comprehensive scientific books on carnivorous plants I have ever found is the Juniper book entitled 'Carnivorous Plants.' This book was originally published in 1989 for a very short print run and distributed primarily to academic institutions. Owing to its beautiful electron microscope images and the authors' elegantly informative writing style, this book is much sought after (it maintains a wait list on Amazon.com, and it sells for over $200, and I hear that Triffid Park in Australia sells the original book for $3000.00). Alas, due to it's limited print run the book is fairly rare and very hard to acquire. I taught a class at the University where I made this book a required reader for my students. Because of the affiliation with the University, we gained reprint rights and were able to produce cover-to-cover photocopy reprints of the book. A side perk is that I can sell unlimited numbers of the reader to anyone and everyone who desires a copy (as long as I don't mark up the price). There is some resolution degradation of the electron microscope images because of the photocopying procedure, but overall the reproduction quality is good, and all of the text is perfectly legible. I passed around copies of the book at the Winter BACPS meeting as well as at the spring meeting in Berkeley, and have been distributing copies to members upon request. If you would like to order a copy of the Juniper book, it is available from the Copy Central on the corner of University and Shattuck in Berkeley where the reproduction cost of the book is $34.70 (plus $2.86 tax = $37.56). If you desire to purchase a reprint of the Juniper book, you can contact me and I can have a reprint made for you. If you would like a copy shipped to you, I need about $5 for shipping materials and postage, making the total about $42. I can take PayPal transfers, checks, money orders, or cash (though I wouldn't mail cash). If you want to meet, we don't even have to ship the book, and that way we could save some money. Or, you could go to the Copy Central in Berkeley and buy the reader directly yourself; they still have a few copies on hand. My e-mail (and PayPal) address is (removed) -Christopher Turbeville P.S. If you missed the opportunity to order a book to be picked up at the 5/10/03 BACPS meeting at UC Berkeley, the book can still be ordered until June and mailed to you, so please write if you want one! =========================================== TISSUE CULTURE BUSINESS FOR SALE Michael Louie After 22 years of successful small-scale tissue culture work in San Mateo, California, Richard Nakanishi has decided to retire and has put his business up for sale. Richard learned tissue culture directly from the American scientist who first proposed using this propagation technique commercially. Over the past eight years, he has used tissue culture to propagate unique or extreme clones of Haworthia, Agave, Aloe, various cacti and other succulents. Richard's experience include the micropropagation of seedless grapes, cacao (chocolate), high-yield saffron corms, bromeliads, orchids, rare carnivorous plants and much more. He developed techniques to start cultures from inflorescence, anthers as well as traditional meristem. The business includes all the equipment, accounts, techniques, secret formulas, chemicals and the San Mateo facility--which has very low rent. Richard will avail himself as a consultant to the new owner and transfer his technology, customer accounts and business experience. This is a unique opportunity for the entrepreneur who loves to work with plant propagation. If Richard does not sell the business, he is interested in selling all of the equipment which includes shelves, grow lights, scientific glassware, flow hoods and some equipment that he had acquired when the Rod McClellan micropropagation facilities closed. Richard is a trustworthy, inspirational and generous person who has developed this successful business from the ground up and would love to see the legacy continue. If you are interested in this business opportunity or the available equipment, contact Richard Nakanishi directly by calling his office in San Mateo (650) 348-4240. =========================================== BACPS CALENDAR June 20 Deadline for submissions to July Bulletin July 10 Deadline for submissions to Summer 2003 newsletter August 23 Summer Meeting, U.C.
