                             NEXT MEETING

Date: February 2, 2002, Saturday
Time: 12:00 Noon
Location: Randall Museum, San Francisco
Program: Alfred Lau: "Mexican Pinguicula"

Alfred Lau, authority on Mexican Pinguicula, spent over 4 decades in
Mexico undertaking major expeditions to remote areas to fulfill a life
passion for plant hunting and botanical research. For the first twenty
years his interests were confined to cacti, succulents, orchids,
bromeliads, passion flowers, cycads, and gesneriads. In 1980, Joe
Mazrimas contacted Alfred by letter in order to stir an interest in
looking for Pinguicula. Joe sent him information and pictures of the
plants known to be growing in Mexico at that time and encouraged him to
search for new species. As a result, Alfred discovered P. laueana, P.
gigantea, and several more species yet to be described.

Five years ago BACPS had the privilege of hearing a lecture by Alfred on
Pinguicula, illustrated with wonderful slides of flowering plants in
habitat. It seemed strange to see P. gigantea next to Agave and
Tilandsia since they typically grow in a desert environment. He showed
high altitude P. cyclosecta plants growing upside down on wet walls of
shallow rocky caves and many species like P. gypsicola and P.
heterophylla growing on pure gypsum. For our 10th anniversary, Alfred
will return to give us an update on new discoveries as well as review
his earlier work for those who missed the previous lecture.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The meeting starts at noon with the social, display, and plant sale (10%
of sales and auction go to BACPS). Announcements begin at approximately
1:00 p.m., followed by the program, raffle, and auction. Members are
encouraged to bring plants for the display table, auction, and raffle.

The Randall Museum is located at 199 Museum Way, telephone (415)554-
9600. Please note that the Museum is undergoing renovations and that
part of the parking lot is temporarily unavailable, making close parking
more limited than usual. However, parking should be available on nearby
residential streets.

DIRECTIONS: From either the Bay Bridge or the Peninsula, follow the
freeway signs to Mission Street and get off at the Mission/Duboce exit.
Stay on Duboce Avenue, which runs into Market Street. Make a 45-degree
left turn onto Market Street. Immediately after the Safeway store, make
a 45-degree right turn onto 14th Street. Go up the hill. One block after
crossing Castro Street, the main road curves to the left and becomes
Roosevelt Way. Continue 1/4 mile, and turn left onto Museum Way, just
before the main road curves right and continues up the hill. (If you
reach Levant Street, you have gone too far.) Go to the end of Museum Way
and park.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: From Downtown San Francisco on Market Street take
the K, L, or M subway or the F streetcar. Either (1) Get off at the
Castro Street Station (Castro and Market). Walk up Castro to 16th
Street. Walk uphill on 16th one block. Go right on Flint, and take the
footpath up to the museum. Or (2) To avoid walking uphill, get off at
the Church Street Station (Church and Market). Transfer to the 37
Corbett bus. Ask the driver to let you off at the closest bus stop to
the Randall Museum (Roosevelt Way and Museum Way). Walk to the end of
Museum Way.

Questions regarding the meeting should be directed to Geoff Wong.

                          PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
                              Geoff Wong

Welcome to the New Year. As BACPS President in 2002 I will be focusing
on two main goals. First, I want to provide a series of stimulating
presentations for the meetings, covering a wide range of topics related
to CP. The other priority will be to bring in new people to help with
the various BACPS functions. The long-term vitality of any organization
depends on a continuous influx of new ideas and energy, which enables
the group to meet the evolving interests of the general membership. If
anyone has ideas for improving the society or wishes to help in any way,
even to a limited extent, we would be glad to hear from you.

It is my pleasure to welcome Greg Lum as our new VP and Newsletter
Editor. Greg has had an absorbing interest in CP since a very young age
and has since had a lot of experience in the horticultural field. We are
delighted that he can actively contribute to BACPS this year. Judith
Finn and Joe Mazrimas will continue to serve as Secretary and Treasurer,
respectively, with their many years of experience with BACPS. I would
like to introduce new member Zach Lim as our Randall Museum
Liaison, in which role he will coordinate arrangements with the Museum,
table setup, and putting things away after the meetings. Mark Bellinger,
having worked with the raffle tickets for a while, has become the
official Raffle Manager. Please lend these new officers and coordinators
your support.

For our first meeting this year, we look forward to an exciting
presentation by Alfred Lau. Thanks go to Joe for making the
arrangements. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

                                        Geoff
